The Structure of the School Day

Our teaching day and registration begins at 8:50 am and ends at 3:30pm. If you would like your child to attend before or after school club (Squirrel Club), a member of Squirrel Club will ensure that your child is in their classroom by 9:50 and is collected from their classroom after school.  Should you wish to speak to a member of teaching staff, we ask that you to do this after school or telephone the school office for an appointment as learning time starts promptly at 8:50.   Messages which are given to staff in the mornings are passed on via our communication books at the entrances.

Independent Learning

It is a massive change for your child moving from Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1.  We work hard to support them to develop independence which will help equip them for Key Stage 2.  This includes giving your child ownership of their homework and reading books and although many reminders are given, it is part of your child’s independent learning to hand in these to their teacher.  We wish for our learners to have growth mind-sets and recognise that it is absolutely essential to make mistakes and learn from them. Your child might tell you about ‘stuckness’ and how it is good to be stuck as it is the most exciting part of education. Please support your child as they journey through Years 1 and 2.

Reading

Your child will have a reading record and a reading book. Children must read daily. Please sign and comment in this record to communicate how well your child did, what you discussed about the text and identify areas of improvement. Reading in Year 1 and 2 is about building up sight word recognition, reading with fluency, re-read books to build up their fluency and confidence in word reading and comprehension.  For this reason it is important you read your child’s reading book with them at least twice to give your child time to read, talk to you about the book, the plot, the characters and the setting or with a non-fiction text, to summarise the main points of a page, the layout and use technical features such as the index, the contents page and the glossary as well as discussing word meanings and opinions about a book or linking it to their own experiences.

Homework

In Year 1 and 2, homework will be given every Monday and it is expected in every Friday morning.  There will be a range of activities that develop basic skills in maths and English.  Children will also receive spellings every Monday and will be tested every Friday.  It is very important to support your child to learn these as they impact on your child’s writing development.

Water

Children are encouraged to have their own water bottle, labelled with their name. Water bottles are kept in the classroom all week and re-filled daily. They are to be taken home every Friday to be cleaned.

PE

PE

It is important that your child has a PE kit in school every day as PE sessions can change due to weather, outside coaches coming in and the need of the hall.  If your child attends an afterschool sports club please ensure your child’s kit is back in school the following day or they have a separate kit for the club.

Trips

Trips off site other than visits to St Barnanbas’ Church and local areas will require a permission slip. Details of trips will be given in advance.

Collection list

Please let us have your most up to date contact details and the names of those people who you authorise to pick up your child from school. There are slips available from the school office for you to complete.
