Welcome to Year Five
Maple Class Teacher: Mrs Hitchmough
Beech Class Teacher: Miss Laverty
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Stockwell
Our School Day
Our teaching day begins at 8:50am and ends at 3:30pm, unless you would like for your child to attend after school club. Should you wish to speak to a member of staff, beyond messages passed on via our communication books at the entrances, we ask you to do this after school if possible or telephone the school office for an appointment. We hope you feel happy to come and talk to staff about your child on a formal and informal basis throughout the year.
As your child is now in Upper Key Stage 2, we consider Year 5 to be the year of ‘growth’ both in the classroom and out. Part of this growth is for our children to find things out for themselves, prepare things for themselves and think for themselves. We wish for our learners to have ‘growth’ mindsets and recognise that it is absolutely essential to make mistakes and learn from them. Your child may talk about E + R = O, and this is something all children are reminded of to help make a positive outcome to a situation.
The Woodslee Way
Our values play a very important role in the life of your child at Woodslee. They are at the very heart of everything your child will do. Encourage your child to talk about their 5R role models and what learning behaviours are expected.
Please let us have your most up to date contact details (give to the school office) and the names of those people who you authorise to pick up your child from school. Please be aware that our policy states children should be collected by someone over the age of 16.
In Year 5, homework will be given every Monday and it is expected in every Friday. Your child will receive spellings and Maths skills on a Monday. Pupils will also be provided with a weekly focus linked to their theme they are studying. At various points in the year, children may also receive a Topic/Science task to complete, which may be something creative. Throughout the year, there will also be after school interventions taking place for Maths and English. Your child will receive a letter if one of the clubs meets their needs.
Your child will have a reading record card and a reading book. Children should read daily. Please sign and comment on this record to communicate how well your child did and identify any areas of improvement. Reading in Year 5 is more about the comprehension of the text rather than a child’s ability to read fluently, so please ask your child questions about what they have read.
Children are encouraged to have their own water bottle, labelled with their name. Water bottles are kept in the classroom all week and re-filled daily. They are to be taken home every Friday to be cleaned.
In Year 5, PE this term is every Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has their kit ready for the lesson.
Trips off site other than visits to St Barnanbas’ Church and local areas will require a permission slip. Details of trips will be given in advance.
We look forward to getting know you and your child over the coming year and helping your child on the road to success.
We wish our relationship with you to be one of a partnership, home and school sharing responsibility for supporting your child through these crucial years of learning.
